There has been a quiet explosion on the internet. Covid has helped but the movement was there before. The explosion is training. You can learn to do anything which means there is no longer any excuse.
Once upon a time not so long ago, people who read about the need to keep their skills constantly updated could talk about the money and time that an MBA took, or the night classes which their young family prevented them from attending, or the distance of the college from their home or office.
Not anymore. And I’m not talking about MBAs although they are available. There is no longer any excuse for people to not understand how Facebook Advertising or Google SEO works. Whether its micro training on Tik Tok or whole Yale and Stanford courses complete with exams and certificates, its all there.
And we all have access to this through the smartphones which 5 billion of us carry around with us every day.
So next time you interview someone for a job, and you get to that part of their CV where it talks about education and personal interests, if it doesn’t talk about the multiple skills acquired through training courses, I think you’ll have your answer.
For those taking interviews or anything else, I’m afraid you’ve run out of excuses, and more than that, people in the developing world now have (free) access to the same courses and they’re offering their new skills to your employers at a fraction of your cost through Upwork.
Better stop reading this and get on to LinkedIn Learning, Coursera, Udemy and YouTube. It’s all waiting for you.
